Writing Quests Hiatus
Hiatus Announcement
Starting in July 2026, Writing Quests will be going on hiatus.
In the spring of 2024, a group of writing community leaders, inspired by NaNoWriMo but disagreeing with the direction that NaNoWriMo was moving to, created Writing Quests to motivate fellow writers around the globe to draft their novels inspired and supported by a community of their peers. Since that time, other communities created their own resources to help writers looking to achieve their goals, including NaNo 2.0, another group many Writing Quests volunteers contribute to..
We’ve decided to scale back our efforts with Writing Quests. In addition, much of Novel Quests is stable and available for groups to continue using and developing it themselves.
The Writing Quests mission was to provide writing groups with a flexible framework that can be used to generate writing challenges at any time of the year. We’ve accomplished much of that. We
Compiled a framework for hosting a writing challenge
Created progress and winner badges
Developed a Google Sheets Progress Tracker for a monthly challenge
Designed Questy for year-round tracking of projects from first to final draft
Produced a newsletter
Hosted 33 livestreams on Youtube
We’re proud of what we’ve produced, and these resources won’t be going anywhere. The websites writingquests.org and novelquest.org will remain active, and the framework, the badges, and the progress tracker will remain available, as well as the past newsletter articles and recorded YouTube livestreams. Questy’s code base, which is open source, will remain available on GitHub, but those needing a tracker will be directed to the new NaNo 2.0 tracker that is under development. During its hiatus, Writing Quests won’t be creating new content - no new YouTube livestreams, newsletters, updated trackers or badges, etc. Novel Quest will also still be active, though future development will likely be regional or local rather than centrally managed as part of Writing Quests. If you find yourself missing Writing Quests, consider checking out Trackbear or NaNo 2.0 or Rough Draft Month.
Thank you so much for being a part of the Writing Quests journey. Your contributions, your participation, your stories, have made it all worthwhile, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
In the meantime, we hope you’ll join us in enjoying a cupcake or similar treat as we celebrate all of what Writing Quests has done! Hope you all have fun doing Novel Quest, NaNo, or your writing challenge of choice this November!
